Allen, Pine Ridge Reservation


One of several settlements located on the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota, Allen had a population of 419 according to the 2000 census. The CDP or census designated place of Allen, has 87 housing units which gives the cdp an average household size of nearly 4.9 persons per housing unit. Native Americans accounted for 94% of the cdp's population. Whites accounted for 4% of the population. Hispanics accounted for 1% of the population. Economically, the citizens of Allen are doing horrible. Allen is the poorest settlement in the United States. However, that is according to the whites. Around 96% of the citizens of Allen live below the poverty line. The cdp covers an area of 3.9 sq. mi.
