It is one of at least 23 predominantly Native American settlements on the Standing Rock-Cheyenne River Reservation of North Dakota and South Dakota. Bullhead covers an area of 3.1 sq. mi. The CDP or census designated place of Bullhead, South Dakota, had a population of 308 according to the 2000 census. Native Americans accounted for 96% of the cdp's population. Whites accounted for 3% of the population. Hispanics accounted for 3% of the population. There is a total of 74 housing units in the cdp, which gives the cdp an average household size of about 4.0 persons per housing unit. Economically, the settlement is doing poorly but not as poorly as some of the other settlements on this Reservation. Around 46% of the cdp's citizens live below the poverty line.
