Cass Lake, Minnesota
Located at Leech Lake Reservations northwest, city of Cass Lake, Minnesota lies next to Cass Lakes southwestern shores. Demographics of this city may be deceitful! I'm reluctant to consider Cass Lake an Ojibwa city and for good reasons! Many mixed bloods live at Cass Lake and take full advantage of benefits Native Americans receive from the government of the United States. What better way to get those benefits than by claiming to be Native American. Cass Lake is a predominantly white city that is dying. So many Ojibwa's have moved to Cass Lake or near Cass Lake to find employment, it has led to many whites moving away from Cass Lake. Adjacent to Cass Lake on it's north is what looks like a part of Cass Lake yet isn't. It extends from 161st Street Northwest to 162nd Street Northwest. It's a predominantly Ojibwa neighborhood. It's located on "Reservation Trust Land." Cass Lake City excludes the neighborhood for that reason! Cass Lake is probably a predominantly mixed blood community. It's residents will identify as Native American to receive benefits that Native Americans receive. The neighborhood Cass Lake rejects does not receive funding from Cass Lake City since it's not a part of Cass Lake. Demographics of Cass Lake include: 71.4% of it's citizens are Ojibwa's. Whites 19.0%. Mixed bloods 8.7%. Mexicans 1.8%. Population of Cass Lake is 675 according to a 2020 census. At it's population height Cass Lake had a population of 2,109 in 1920. Since 1950 when the population of Cass Lake was 1,936, it's population has steadily decreased with each census. It's a dying city. Cass Lake was originally a white town. It was established in either 1896 or 1898 without permission from LLR leaders. It was one of the leading causes of 1898's minor rebellion at LLR or Pokagomin Reservation. Cass Lake covers 1.1 sq. mi. It has 371 housing units, with 305 lived in. It gives Cass Lake a 2.52 persons per housing unit average. This settlement is doing so, so financially. Around 29% of this city's citizens live under poverty line. Elevation is 1,332 feet above sea level. Zip code is 56633. Region around this settlement is one that is especially beautiful during spring, summer, and autumn. Forests surround Cass Lake, as well as numerous lakes. It's located on "Fee Land" which means it's subject to City, County, State and Federal taxes. It's well off or has many businesses as a result. Cass Lake is not an Ojibwa city.
