Shoshone Ojibwa's | Ojibwa Tribes

Couchiching, Ontario

It's a community of Rainy Lake Reservation which is adjacent to Minnesota and old Leech Lake Reservation. Below are links to google earth photos of Couchiching. Wikipedia tells how this town got it's name. Their information is confusing! Couchiching is a locative. It means "Inlet Place," or Cou-chi-chig according to wikipedia. Evidently in Ojibway it's pronounced Go-ji-jig. In north Minnesota, Ojibway word for "inlet place and mouth of river place" is zaa-gi-ig. Sa-gi means "mouth of river" in Ojibway. So "go-ji-ji" has another meaning. It does not mean "inlet and mouth of river." It means "examine, experiment and trial" in Ojibway. It's derived from godjiewisiwin. These people may be whites and mixed bloods. Accrording to wikipedia, they lived further west then moved east to near where they now live. Supposedly they lived further north then requested to relocate near Fort Francis because of a trade post. Sounds like an experiment! They are probably from "Stanjikoming" Ojibway's. They lived on an island within Rainy Lake up to 1988. They were forced to relocate to where they now live which is 5 miles or 8 kilometers north of Couchiching. A road was built to assimilate them after forced relocation. Ojibway leaders did not want to move to where this town is. Canadian leaders coerced them through an experiment in trade, to relocate in late 19th century. Canada does not provide demographics for Ojibway Towns. Only their Reservations. Leaders of this Ojibway Reserve, are possibly allowing whites to invade and colonize their domain. According to 2016's census, this Reserve has a population of 810. I can't determine what their towns population is. I also can't determine their towns demographics or how many whites live there. I do know Ojibway Language is no longer spoken at this Ojibway Town. East of Maurice Road are nearly 100 housing units. I suspect many are owned by whites. I counted about 170 to 175 housing units at this Ojibway Town using google earth. Average household size for this Reserve is 3.1 persons per household. Population is anywhere from 520 to 540.
