Old Odanah, Minnesota
Located in far northern Wisconsin, just south of Lake Superior, is Bad River Reservation's CDP (census designated place) of Old Odanah. It's original name is Odanah. Below are several links to google earth photos of Bad River Reservation's CDP settlement of Odanah, Wisconsin. This Ojibway settlement is referred to as Old Odanah and is not to be confused with the other village with the same name, excepting the "old." That be New Odanah which is better known as Odanah. Old Odanah has a population of 13 yet it's population is much higher. Using google earth, i counted around 50 to 60 housing units. Most of it's housing units are located along Caville Road. BRR's pow wow grounds are located at this village. In Ojibway, their word for city and town is O-de-na. In some Ojibway dialect's it's pronounced O-da-nah. Old Odanah's population is anywhere from 150 to 240. In 1960, as a result of disapproval, Odanah was flooded. It forced 100's or possibly 1,000's (there is more than one account of the flood) of BRR citizens to relocate east of Bad River. New Odanah was created and is now BRR's principle village. Not all Ojibway's left however. Old Odanah is yet there and it's population is increasing. They should change it's name to Bad River (Majji Sippi) which it's located very near to. Elevation is 610 feet above sea level. Zip code is 54861. Native Americans make up 95% of the population. Whites make up 4% of the population.
