Pablo is the largest predominantly Native American settlement on the Flathead Reservation and the capitol of the Reservation. Pablo is a settlement which is currently going through tough times. Settlements which have populations of around 2,000, usually have 100s of businesses. In the case of Pablo, it is different. Many of the jobs in Pablo are tribal government jobs, schools, police, hospital and so on. Pablo is situated a little west of the Mission Mountains which are a beautiful sight the entire year. It is situated in the Mission Valley, or southern Flathead Valley. Some of the trees which covered the entire valley, are still there. Pablo covers 4.9 sq. mi. Pablo is the Flathead Reservation Indian settlement experiencing the highest population growth rate.
It is a cdp (census designated place) but most of Pablo has the appearance of a city. The great majority of the cdp's housing units a located within a small area that covers less than 1.0 sq. mi. The northwestern part of the cdp between Chief White Feather Drive, Pablo West Road, Old Highway 93, and Highway 93 has around 150 or so housing units with mobile homes making up about a third of them.
In the immediate surrounding area to the east (the other 4.0 sq. mi., Pablo covers) are many more housing units. They are located between Courville Street, North Foothills Drive, Clairmont Road, and Highway 93. Many (around 100 or more) are located in the woods which are located within that area. In the main part of the cdp, between Pablo West Road, Division Street, Montana Avenue, and Highway 93 are probably over 200 housing units. The predominantly white city of Ronan is located 4 miles south of Pablo. The predominantly white city of Polson is located 5 miles north of Pablo.
In Pablo, is the Salish Kootenai College. The college employs over 345 people. A total of 1,112 students attend the college. Not all are Native American. Since Pablo has a population of 2,254 according to the 2010 census, it means the population of the campus is not included with that of Pablo. People aged between 18 and 24 make up 10% of the population of Pablo. So the population of Pablo is actually significantly higher than 2,254. If they actually included the population of Salish Kootenai College with that of Pablo, it would make up half of the population of Pablo.
In the 2010 census, the population of Pablo was 2,254. That is an increase of 24% from the 2000 census of 1,814. There is a total of 821 housing units in the cdp of Pablo, with around 740 occupied. It gives the cdp an average household size of about 3.0 persons per housing unit. Native Americans account for 54% of the cdp's population. Whites accounted for 33% of the population. Mixed bloods accounted for 7% of the population, while Hispanics accounted for 4% of the cdp's population. Although Pablo is the seat of government or capitol of the Flathead Reservation, around 28% of the cdp's citizens live below the poverty line. The cdp's zip code is 59855. Pablo's elevation is at 3,091 feet above sea level. Below are several pictures of Pablo, Flathead Reservation.
