Rocky Boy Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana

St. Mary, Montana

It is located about 7 miles south of Babb and was included in the land alloted to the Chippewa's in 1909. St. Mary is primarily a resort settlement which tends to the needs of vacationers. Lower St. Mary Lake seperates Babb from St. Mary. St. Mary is included in Babb's zip code area of 59411, which means it is a part of Babb's demographics. The 2010 census put the population of the Babb zip code area including St. Mary, at 460. Native Americans including mixed bloods and Latinos, make up 80% of the population, while whites make up 20% of the population. Zip code area 59411 covers 246 sq. mi. and includes Babb, Duck Lake, Peigan Crossing (border station), and St. Mary. It (Babb's zip code area) could be chief Rocky Boy's Reservation. Only around 50 or so people live year round in St. Mary. To it's east, is St. Mary's Ridge which keeps that region between Babb and St. Mary, less windy during winter months. Come summer time the population can increase by 10 times because of vacationers. The number of housing units in St. Mary is included in Babb's which is 326 which means most are used by cabin owners and vacationers. About 40% of the population lives under the poverty line. Zip Code is 59411. Elevation is 4,550 feet above sea level. Below are several links to photographs of Chief Rocky Boys Reservation within Blackfeet Reservation, settlement of St. Mary, Montana.
