Trenton, Fort Peck Reservation
Leaders of Turtle Mountain Reservation are adamant that Trenton, North Dakota is a Turtle Mountain Reservation town. They are wrong! Old Fort Buford Military Reservation was set aside for chief Rocky Boy's Montana Ojibwa Subjects in 1909. Fort Buford Military Reservation is adjacent to Fort Peck Reservation which means Trenton is a Fort Peck Reservation community. Below are links to google earth photos of Trenton, North Dakota. There are two portions of Trenton. Main Trenton and Southwest Trenton which is a distinct community. Chief Rocky Boy negotiated with Frank Churchill in 1908-1909 about Fort Peck Reservation. They wanted to set aside land near it. That land is old Fort Buford Military Reservation which is now a part of Fort Peck Reservation. Turtle Mountain Reservation has no jurisdiction over Trenton. Fort Peck Reservation does! Ojibwa's of Trenton and the surrounding region including the Williston, North Dakota region and nearby Fort Berthold Reservation, originally lived from Great Falls to Helena before being relocated in late 1909. The population of Trenton is 488 according to 2020's census. Ojibwa's make up 45.7% of the population. Whites 34.0%. Mixed bloods 19.7%. Mexicans 4.9%. Again Ojibwa's refusing to identify as native! Asians 0.2%. Climate conditions of Trenton are long cold winters and short hot summers. Trenton is adjacent to small mountains which are on the north. It's a scenic location.
