Viejas


It is one of the many communities of the Black Hills Indian Reservation. It is located 3.7 miles east of Alpine, California. El Capitan Reservoir is located over 5 miles to the northwest. Barona is located 11 miles northwest of Viejas. According to the 2000 census, the population of Viejas, was 394. Indians account for 146 of the population of Viejas. Mexicans account for 39 of the communities population. Whites account for 206 of the population of Viejas. They are having serious problems at Viejas. If immediate action is not taken, the community will be lost to the whites. There are 135 housing units in Viejas. The average household size is 2.9 persons per housing unit.
