Washagamis Bay First Nation

This band of Ojibway's live in far western northwestern Ontario, near Minnesota. Their community is part of Lake of the Woods Reserve. Below are google earth photos of Washagamis Bay First Nation and other communities of Lake of the Woods Reserve. Canada will not recognize this Reserve they agreed to when they negotiated with Ojibway leaders during 1869-1870's Red River Rebellion. Ojibway leaders wanted a fair treaty and large Reserves for allowing Red River Colony to become independant of Ojibway rule. Canada agreed then lied. Chief Yellow Quill (he may have been chief Big Bear) had stationed Ojibway Soldiers at Portage la Prairie to prevent whites, Eskimos and mixed bloods from expanding west from Red River Colony. That led to those negotiations that led to creations of Rainy Lake Reserve and Lake of the Woods Reserve. Both are quite large. On-Reserve population of Washagamis Bay First Nation is 140 according to 2016's census. They have 231 dwellings with 46 lived in. Average household size is 3.1 persons per household. Ojibway Language is widely spoken. Around 30 people speak Ojibway at Washagamis Bay. Today, there are 35 or more Lake of the Woods Reserves. However, that original Lake of the Woods Reserve is yet in existence.
