Rocky Boy Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana

June 2, 1763 Battle of Fort Michilimackinac

On Thursday June 2, 1763, 100s of Ojibway Soldiers who had surrounded Fort Michilimackinac, used trickery to enter that fort. They commenced to playing a ball game known in Ojibway as baggatiway, outside Fort Michilimackinac and while it's doors were open, they deliberately tossed a ball inside that fort. It's English garrison did not know about what was going on 100s of miles further south or thought themselves to be safe. If they had known about all their forts being attacked, they would have fought. Anywhere from 35 to over 100 English Soldiers were stationed at Fort Michilimackinac. It was just as important a fortification as were Fort Detroit and Fort Pitt, if not more important to English leaders. After entering Fort Michilimackinac, Ojibway Soldiers killed anywhere from 20 to 70 whites, then took Fort Michilimackinac under their control. They captured those remaining whites they didn't kill. Their idiotic Indian allies who Ojibway leaders were protecting, forcefully took those white prisoners from Ojibway Soldiers and sailed them to Montreal by way of Lake Huron, Lake Nipssing and Ottawa River. What they got in return is a disgrace to human civilization. It led to nearly 100,000 Indian casualties and an end to Pontiac's War.
