September 4, 1878 Battle of Heart Mountain

Still pursuing Ojibways following prophecy, American Soldiers led by Colnel Nelson Miles and their Dakota allies, went a searching for them in Yellowstone National Park. Much of Yellowstone National Park is within Blackfeet Reservation. Miles and his 150 American Soldiers and 35 Dakota allies, were not in Yellowstone National Park for a vacation. However did they come up with that one? They were searching for Ojibways who had fought in Battle of Clark's Fork that very day or on Wednesday September 4, 1878. Remember on Thursday August 29, 1878 another battle was fought near Index Peak in Wyoming. It was Ojibways from that battle who migrated to or lived in Yellowstone National Park. Obviously there was a large number of Anishinabek heading down to northwestern Wyoming, from southwest Montana. Once American Soldiers learned where Anishinabek were camped, they attacked. They killed 11 Anishinabek and wounded an unknown number. They also captured 31. Many others escaped and continued their exodus west. White casualties were 3 killed and 1 wounded.
