July 26, 1865 Platte Bridge Battle

On Wednesday July 26, 1865 white invaders were still trying to force their way into Montana. They had built Platte Bridge Station as part of their military plans of establishing military posts in Montana and Wyoming. Platte Bridge Battle was a part of Mullan Road War. A list of Mullan Road War battles is above. Within Platte Bridge Station, were 120 American Soldiers led by Maj. Martin Anderson. One of their officers stationed at Platte Bridge Station, was Lieutenant Caspar Collins. Casper, Wyoming would be named for him. Collins was instructed to lead 25 soldiers out of their military post to attempt to meet up with an expected wagon train with supplies. Collins knew as so many others before him, that he would be killed by Ojibway Soldiers. Soon after leaving Platte Bridge Station, Anishinabe Soldiers numbering probably near a thousand, attacked Collins tiny American military force near a bridge that small white military force had just crossed. And they knew about another American military force of 40 soldiers led by Lieutenant Henry C. Bretney, following behind Collins force and ambushed them at that same bridge Collins force had just crossed. In that minor battle, of those 65 white soldiers who fought, 5 were killed including Collins, and 8 more were wounded. Anishinabe casualties were probably much higher. However, Anishinabe Soldiers were victorious.
