Fort Mojave Reservation

It is located in Arizona, California and Nevada. Below are maps of this peculiar Reservation and links to google earth photos of Arizona Village. There is one large area where this Reservation is entirely intact. It's where original Fort Mojave Reservation was. Surrounding it is a checkerboarded area numbering around 33 parcels of land which are really land allotments numbering 33. They were set aside in 1910 and 1911. There are no Indian towns within the one large area that is intact. However, there is a white resort town adjacent to a golf course in it. Leaders of this Reservation are disturbing. Mojave People were set aside this Reservation in 1870. It was small and all but ignored until around 1910. It is also home to many Chemehuevi People. They are both Comanche-Shoshone or Ojibwa. However, Mojave People are an admixture of Ojibwa and non Ojibwa. Mexican Linguists named their language family Mexican-Opata Language Family. They were listed as speakers of Mexican Dialect which is awkward because they lived within an area where speakers of Comanche-Shoshone Dialect is spoken. Their language is a dialect same as that of Papago's, Pepehuan's, Pima's and Yuman's. In fact, they were listed under El Yuman. American's renamed their language family Uto-Aztecan Language Family and removed El Yuman. They shouldn't have done that! We must observe Mexican Linguists information! Accordingly, an exact date Fort Mojave Reservation was set aside, is possibly sometime in 1911.

Actually land was allotted adjacent to Fort Mojave Reservation. This is why: On January 14, 1902 chief Rocky Boy sent a letter to President Roosevelt telling him chief Rocky Boy was leader of landless Ojibwa's in various States in the United States and requested for Reservations. They denied his request for Reservations yet agreed to chief Rocky Boy's proposal to allow his Ojibwa Subjects to settle on land not surveyed or to put it bluntly, to settle on unallotted land within existing Reservations or in some cases, were given land allotments next to Reservations. Those land allotments were for chief Rocky Boy's landless Ojibwa Subjects.

Most of Fort Mojave Reservation is located in Arizona (23,699 acres). Next is California (12,633 acres) and then Nevada (5,582 acres). Fort Mojave Reservation covers 41,914 acres or 65.5 sq. mi. or 169.6 sq. km. Reason for these late additions to Fort Mojave Reservation, was Mexico's Civil War. Below is an excerpt from a September 1914 newspaper article. Chief Rocky Boy promised to stay neutral in Mexico's Civil War. He was negotiating with Secretary of the Interior Lane, about securing land for his landless Ojibwa Subjects. It had nothing to do with Europes War. A series of negotiations followed after chief Rocky Boy and his brother chief Pennato, fled their Reservation within Blackfeet Reservation in 1910. They include these: Executive orders of December 1, 1910, February 2, 1911 and act of June 25, 1910 allotted land to Fort Mojave Reservation. Thus, why Fort Mojave Reservation is checkerboarded. They are land allotments. In 1913, it was reported that Fort Mojave Reservation had 31,328 acres of unallotted land. Of course, that be those land allotments except old Fort Mojave Military Reservation which has a land area of 14,000 acres. Fort Mojave Reservation original land area was around 10,500 acres.

Population of Fort Mojave Reservation is 1,697 according to 2020's census. Natives make up 814 of the population. Whites 596. Mexicans 314. Mixed bloods 182. Blacks 9. Asians 6. Though there are no native towns within Fort Mojave Reservation's intact area, there are Ojibwa towns on some land allotments. They include Arizona Village and Mojave Ranch. Arizona Village is largest one. It's population is 1,057 according to 2020's census. Natives make up 47.8% of the population or 505. Whites 36.4% or 385. Mexicans 18.6% or 197. Mixed bloods 9.8% or 104. Blacks 0.7% or 7. Asians 0.1% or 1. Mesquite Creek is a white census designated place located on one of the land allotments. Thus, why this Reservations leaders are disturbing. Though they have demographics for Fort Mojave Reservation, we can't rely on them. Determining Fort Mojave Reservation correct population is a challenge. Reservation leaders have leased much of their land to farming companies. Exactly how much revenue is generated by leasing their land is questionable. Climate conditions are similar to that of Colorado River Reservation but slightly cooler in winter and hotter in summer. Ojibwa's much further north would not like this Reservation because of extreme hot weather. They prefer cool climate regions.
