Passamaquoddy Indian Township Reservation
This Ojibway Reservation known as Passamaquoddy Indian Township Reservation, is located in Washington County, Maine. Historically, these Ojibway People were not native to this region but when whites commenced to invade during 16th century, first wars occurred between them invading whites who used islands including Newfoundland, Greenland and Iceland to build up their military forces, and Ojibway's. Dutch and French, first entered St. Lawrence River Valley in either 1530's or 1540's and discoverd a non Algonquian People living there. Around 1600, they returned and found Ojibway People living in St. Lawrence River Valley and further east. These Ojibway People are known as Ab-ben A-ki which means "Eastern Earth" in Ojibway Language. It should be Ab-ben A-ki'o which means "Eastern Earth People." Plural is Ab-ben A-ki-oke. These eastern Ojibway's known as Ab-ben A-ki'o include Passamaquoddy. To translate what it means is not simple. According to wikipedia it's derived from "Pes-ko-to-muh-ka-ti." It supposedly means "Pollock Spearer." We see an Ojibway word for "black" in Peskotomuhkati." It's muh-ka-ti. Pas-sa Ma-kwa-di is not pronounced that way however. So what does Pes-ko-to-muh-ka-ti actually mean? Probably Valley Black or possibly Valley Bear. As for "Passamaquoddy" definition that's easier! It means Valley Bear People in Ojibway Language. It refers to their totem which was Ojibway Nations Military and Police Totem. Passamaquoddy People speak Ojibway. After these Eastern Ojibway's agreed to peace after War of 1812, they were set aside Passamaquoddy Indian Township Reservation. It has a land area of 43.4 sq. mi. or 112.5 sq. km. This Ojibway Reservation is quite small. According to 2010's census, Passamaquoddy Indian Township Reservation has a population of 718. Of it's population of 718, 83.43% are Ojibway. Whites make up 11.54% of it's population. Mixed bloods make up 5.03% of it's population. These people don't know who they are. We know they are Ojibway. If they spoke Ojibway, it means they are Ojibway.
