Red Cliff Reservation
This Ojibway Reservations history involves civil unrest with other Ojibway People. Below is a map of Red Cliff Reservation and links to google earth photos of Red Cliff Town. Two treaties created this small Reservation located along Lake Superiors southern shores in extreme northwest Wisconsin. 1842's Treaty and 1854's Treaty. On October 4, 1842, Ojibway leaders at Ojibway Nations capital at what is now Great Falls, Montana, agreed to cede land in Michigan and Wisconsin. It took another 12 years before Reservations were agreed upon. Red Cliff Reservation was created on September 30, 1854. It was a very small Reservation. It was one section of land (640 acres or 259 hectares) for chief Buffalo who caused civil unrest among Ojibway's in northern Wisconsin. American leaders liked chief Buffalo because he converted to Christianity. His betrayal led to serious unrest among La Pointe Band of Ojibway's. Instead of adhering to Bad River Reservation, chief Buffalo thought only of himself. He was selfish and stupid. Thoughts of owning 640 acres to himself were precious. American leaders had to do something about this civil unrest among Ojibway's in northern Wisconsin. Many Ojibway's followed prophecy and migrated west. Many died on their migration. It's known as Sandy Lake Tragedy. On February 21, 1856, a new treaty was signed without Ojibway Nations Governments approval. American leaders had to create a new Reservation where chief Buffalo lived. Many Ojibway's from La Pointe Band, had converted to Christianity and that caused violence among Ojibway People in northern Wisconsin. What is now Red Cliff Reservation, was created for those Ojibway's that converted to Christianity. They migrated to where chief Buffalo lived on his 640 acres. Today Red Cliff Reservation has a land area of 14,541 acres or 5,884.5 hectares. However, it was actually land for selfish chief Buffalo. We don't recognize chief Buffalo as a signer of any of those treaties. Why? He thought only of himself. He was no different than Hole in the Day. Both thought only of themselves. Population of Red Cliff Reservation is 1,114 according to 2010's census. About 25% of it's population is white. Largest community is Red Cliff.
