This Reservations history is extremely corrupt. It is a former Ojibway Reservation set aside on December 21, 1882. Below are links to google earth photos of Belcourt. After Turtle Mountain Reservation was created, it's land area was what is now Rollette County, North Dakota. It's land area was 937.0 sq. mi. or 2,430 sq. km. It didn't take long for this Ojibway Reservation to bite the dust. Chief Little Shell III was easily persuaded to eradicate Turtle Mountain Reservation. His family had long been allies of whites. Below is a photo of chief Little Shell III. You'll notice he's wearing a medallion he received from whites which signifies he sided with whites. Nearly everything written about chief Little Shell III are lies! The so called "10¢" an acre Treaty is bogus. It has nothing to do with Ojibway land in North Dakota. It deals with Ojibway land at and around Great Falls, Montana. In 1884, chief Little Shell III ceded Turtle Mountain Reservation. Later, 43,820 acres was allotted to 326 Ojibways. What was left was termed "Surplus Land" and ceded. It was reported in 1920, that the population of former Turtle Mountain Reservation was 3,423. Of that, 154 were full blood Ojibway's and 3,269 were half or less Indian blood. American leaders allowed many people that lived at Red River Colony, to settle at Turtle Mountain Reservation. Thus why most people living at former Turtle Mountain Reservation are white!
