Couchiching Ojibway Reserve of Ontario
Chief Yellow Quill and his sub-chiefs, were determined to reach an agreeable treaty with Canada, after chief Yellow Quill stationed Ojibway Soldiers near Portage la Prairie to prevent whites from Red River Colony led by Louis Riel, from expanding west. Below is a map of Couchiching Ojibway Reserve, links to google earth photos of their communities and demographics of Couchiching Reserve. Both parties agreed to treaty negotiations. Chief Yellow Quill wanted large Ojibway Reserves set aside in exchange for allowing Red River Colony to become Manitoba. Treaty 3 established 3 large Ojibway Reserves in northwest Ontario including Couchiching (aka Rainy Lake Ojibway Reserve), Rat Portage (aka Lake of the Woods Ojibway Reserve) and Savanne Ojibway Reserve. Couchiching Reserve leaders were forced to cede much Reserve land without being consulted which means it is illegal. Much of Couchiching Ojibway Reserve has an abundance of agriculture land. Thus, why Canada stole much of Couchiching Reserves land. Each Ojibway Treaty 3 Reserve is named after the agency that managed their Reserves. Couchiching Agency handled Hungry Hall, Little Forks, Long Sault, Manitou, Niacatchewenin, Nickickonsemenecanning, Seine River and Stangekoming.
Lac la Croix was also managed by Couchiching yet it's proper to allow Savanne Ojibway Reserve to claim Lac la Croix because of Quetico Provincial Park. After 1900, Canada took advantage of a defenseless people and stole Reserve land. Anyone knowing about these Ojibway Reserves in northwest Ontario histories, must accept chief Rocky Boy's Ojibway Subjects as citizens of their Reserves. Below is a newspaper article from 1914. Chief Rocky Boy promised to stay out of Mexico's Civil War (it wasn't the conflict in Europe) in exchange for new Reserves. After Treaty 3 was ratified, whites living in south Manitoba led by Louis Riel, were content having south Manitoba become a part of Canada. It did not take Ojibway leaders long to find out they were lied to again by white leaders. Chief Yellow Quill and his sub-chiefs, led many of their Ojibway Subjects north and west as a result of white deceptions. They actually knew long before Canada would steal much of their Reserve, to migrate away. We know Couchiching Ojibway Reserve is real and large, as is Lake of the Woods Reserve or Rat Portage Reserve and Savanne Reserve.
