The August 20, 1862 Battle of Fort Ridgely

This battle was one in which the American soldiers stationed there knew was going to occur. After the Anishinabek commenced their war upon the white settlers who lived upon their Dakota enemy’s land, and probably the Dakota’s who wanted to remain neutral, many of those white settlers fled to Fort Ridgely for protection. Although the fort had probably less than 100 soldiers, the fort did have several large pieces of artillery that they would use against the 800 or more Anishinabe warriors who attempted to destroy the unwanted American fort. For four days the brave Anishinabe warriors attempted everything they could think of to eradicate the unwanted American fort, but the fort was strongly built, and the Americans had the advantage of having the superior weapons. It was an American victory, and we know that the Anishinabek were extremely upset after they agreed to end their siege against the fort. American casualties were 16 with 3 killed. Of course, the Anishinabe warriors endured casualties but they are unknown of at the present time.
