The August 18, 1862 Battle of Lower Sioux Agency

This battle was the first battle between the eastern Pembina Empire and the United States. Not ones to confine themselves just to their lands up in northwestern Minnesota, eastern North Dakota, and northeastern South Dakota, the Pembina Anishinabe warriors were assembled from all three locations, then ordered by their commanders to strike the large concentration of white settlers who were now living on their Dakota enemy’s Minnesota land. Lower Sioux Agency was one of those locations targeted by Anishinabe war commanders for elimination. During the attack on Lower Sioux Agency, the Anishinabe warriors killed 20 Americans, captured 10, but were incapable of inflicting any harm on the remaining 47, who somehow managed to escape.
