The August 18, 1862 Battle of Redwood Ferry

This battle took place soon after the battle at Lower Sioux Agency occurred. Captain John S. Marsh led some 46 American soldiers to Lower Sioux Agency to attempt to aid the Americans there. He left some 54 American soldiers at Fort Ridgely to guard that American fortification. Upon arriving at Lower Sioux Agency, the small American military force discovered the dead bodies of the agency’s doctor and his wife. They were probably singled out by the Anishinabe to be killed, because they believed they were responsible for using Germ Warfare against them. By noon of the same day, the small American military force was near the Minnesota river when all of a sudden they were attacked by the Anishinabek, who numbered probably over 300 warriors, and that meant doom for the small American military force. After about four hours of fighting, 29 of the 46 American soldiers were killed or wounded, with 24 of them killed.
