This battle was fought in the South Dakota lands of the Iron Confederation, in the present day South Dakota county of
Harding. Historians insist that the Americans were going back to the Black Hills for supplies, but their plans may
have been more sinister. On September 8, 150 American soldiers under the command of Captain Anson Mills, located a
small Indian village of around 400 Indians, and by early the next morning, they had surrounded the Indian village then
commenced their assault. Several Indians were killed initially, but most managed to escape to nearby Indian villages,
where close to 1,000 warriors were raised up to aid the village being attacked. By the time the 1,000 or so Iron
Confederations warriors arrived to the besieged village, the Americans had been reinforced and now numbered about
1,000. After the Americans realized that a large group of warriors from the Iron Confederation were now
counterattacking, they ordered that an perimeter be set up to protect their machine guns and howitzers. Evidently a
group of brave warriors from the Iron Confederation, attempted to break through one of the American perimeters to
probably attempt to take the Americans machine guns out, but it failed. By September 10, the Americans ended their
assault on the village then set off for the Black Hills where they were stationed at. Indian casualties in the battle
were around 10 killed and an unknown number wounded and 23 captured. American casualties were around 16 with 3 killed.
