Fort Snelling Massacre
In 1839 an event occurred at an American military fortification in Minnesota, which provides everyone with an view of just how great the bad blood was between the Dakota and the Ojibway, during those times. Arriving at Fort Snelling in the summer of 1839, the Dakota and Ojibway went about their business of receiving their annuities from the Americans, who were preparing to stab both the Dakota and Minnesota Ojibway in the back. At that time the United States truly wanted to send their settlers to the Minnesota and Wisconsin region, but the horrible war going on between the Dakota and the Ojibway in that region, prevented the United States from sending large numbers of white settlers there. In fact, the United States was enticed to seriously attempt to first end the war going on between the Dakota and the Ojibway in the Minnesota and Wisconsin region, before given their white settlers the thumbs up to invade. Of course, during the time of this Dakota massacre of the Ojibway, the United States was in the process of attempting to end the war, but they were definitely shocked upon learning that the Dakota could care less. The Dakota actually massacred the Ojibway on the American forts grounds, which truly must have shocked the American soldiers stationed at the fort. After the killing stopped around 100 Ojibway lay dead around the fort, or hanging from the trees. Some 23 Dakota were killed as well by the shocked Ojibway who paid a dear price for actually visiting the American fort with their Dakota enemy at the same time.
