This battle took place at Fort Abercrombie, which the Anishinabe wanted eradicated. On August 30, 1862 a small
group of brave Anishinabe warriors appeared just outside the walls of the unwanted American fort, then rounded
up the loose cattle of the whites which were there for the taking. Then on September 3, 1862 the Anishinabe
returned again but now they numbered close to 500 warriors, and attacked the unwanted American fort. It was
probably the lack of modern day weapons of war the Indians were without, that allowed the whites to continue
to keep their fortification under white control throughout the siege. Again on September 4 and 5 and 6, the
Anishinabe attacked the unwanted fort enduring the same dismal failure. There was no way the whites were
going to leave the protection of their fortification. Their fort was strongly built and the evil whites
had their howitzers to use, which proved effective against the Anishinabe, who had to depend largely on
primitive weapons like bows and arrows, spears and war clubs. It was a horrible defeat for the brave
Anishinabe warriors. Anishinabe casualties may have been close to 30, with maybe 15 to 20 killed.
American casualties were only 3, which can be attributed to the strong fort they hid in, while the
brave Anishinabe warriors assaulted it.
