Book: Place Names of the Ojibwe In Future Codes

Keeweenaw, L'Anse Reservation

Located at the western portion of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Ojibwa community of Baraga (Keeweenaw), is located about two miles north of the white city of L'Anse, Michigan, which is partially located at L'Anse Reservation. Keeweenaw is located at Ontonagan Ojibwa Reservation. They're not being honest! This location is sacred to Ojibwa People. Seagull Peninsula shows a head of a seagull which is the badge or emblem of Ojibwa People according to Tribal Historian Andrew Blackbird. L'Anse Reservation and Ontonagan Reservation are really one Reservation. Ojibwa leaders were quick to gather those Ojibwa Subjects of theirs that wanted to follow prophesy and migrated west and north, after learning American leaders had betrayed them. They did the right thing! At Baraga's west is a cluster of housing units where Ojibwa's kept together. On the satellite image it's depicted with an arrow pointing to that portion of Baraga where Ojibwa's kept together. Ojibwa's of Baraga (Keeweenaw) of this time are descendants of those Ojibwa's who stayed. According to 2020's census, the village of Baraga has a population of 1,883. Demographics of this Ojibwa community have to be dealt with carefully. White leaders are creating terrible mistakes. At Baraga's extreme south is a prison (a deliberate mistake) where 600 or more inmates are incarcerated. Population of the prison is included with the population of Baraga. Ojibwa's make up 22.8% of the population of Baraga. Whites 37.2%. Mixed bloods 7.5%. Mexicans 1.2%. Blacks 31.4%. Nearly all blacks are incarcerated at the prison at Baraga's extreme south. We have to exclude the prisons population for obvious reasons (it's a prison) to learn of Baraga's demographics. From Baraga's population of 1,883, we have to subtract 628 to find the correct population of Baraga. It's 1,255. Including mixed bloods with the Ojibwa population, the Ojibwa percentage is 30.3% of the population of Baraga. That don't work out however. We'll do it this way! Ojibwa's including mixed bloods number 572. Ojibwa's 430 and mixed bloods 142. Whites number 700. Mexicans number 22. Asians 2. So it's important to clearly define the west portion of Baraga where Keeweenaw is located. Ojibwa's at this community name their domain "Gakiiwe'onaning." It's a combined word that's a locative. Their 19th century ancestors knew from prophesy to migrate away from the evil white race. American leaders refused to follow treaty agreements and let white settlers illegally settle this Ojibwa Reservation. Baraga has a land area of 2.17 sq. mi. or 5.63 sq. km. Elevation of the settlement is 630 feet or 192 meters above sea level. Below are several links to google maps photos of Keeweenaw.
