Chippewa Indians Nawash First Nation & History
This band of chippewa indians live on the east coast of lake huron, not to far from owen sound, ontario. Their tribal history includes many wars fought against the invading whites, and many of their ancestors fleeing to far northern ontario to escape from the white threat. Their ancestors signed the 1923 williams treaty which ceded their land and established their chippewas of nawash first nation or reserve. Their total enrolled band population is over 587. The 159 census is for those living on reserve. The size of their reserve is 7,252 hectares or 17,920 acres.
