It is the only settlement at Northern Cheyenne Reservation that is a town. This Northern Cheyenne Reservation community started as a white town. Not long after Plenty Coups ceded Crow Reservation, chief Rocky Boy was contacted by an Ojibwa leader who had been incarcerated at a Billings, Montana jail for probably protesting the eradication of the Ojibwa Crow Reservation, about finding new Reservation land. Chief Rocky Boy went to work having a land addition added to Northern Cheyenne Reservations east. It extends from Tongue River to the Wyoming border. Northern Cheyenne Reservations east boundary is from Tongue Rivers mouth to the Wyoming Border. It's western boundary is from Big Horn Rivers mouth south to Little Big Horn Rivers mouth then follows Little Big Horn River to the Wyoming border. A native school was established at Lodge Grass which led to many Ojibwa Parents relocating to near Lodge Grass. Almost adjacent on the north of Lodge Grass they established a community to keep close to their children. Over time, their population at Lodge Grass increased. Today, natives make up the majority of the population at Lodge Grass. According to 2020's census Lodge Grass has a population of 441. Natives make up 91.2% of the population. Whites 5.7%. Mixed bloods 3.2%. Mexicans 0.9%. The town covers 0.24 sq. mi. There are a total of 164 housing units in the town which gives the town a 3.0 persons per housing unit average. Economically, the citizens of Lodge Grass are going through an economic crisis. At least 40% of the towns citizens live below the poverty line. Zip code is 59050.
