Lodge Grass, Crow Reservation

It is the only settlement at Crow Reservation that is a town. Below are links to google maps photos of the Ojibwa Enclave of Lodge Grass. This Crow Reservation community was originally a white town. Not long after Plenty Coups illegally ceded much of Crow Reservation, chief Rocky Boy was contacted by an Ojibwa leader who had been incarcerated at a Billings, Montana jail for probably protesting the eradication of much of the Ojibwa Crow Reservation, about finding new Reservation land. Chief Rocky Boy went to work having a land addition added to Northern Cheyenne Reservations east. It extends from Tongue River to the Wyoming border. Chief Rocky Boy settled a large group of his Ojibwa Subjects near what became Lodge Grass around 1900. A native school was established at Lodge Grass which led to many Ojibwa Parents relocating to near Lodge Grass then establishing a village slightly north of Lodge Grass. Almost adjacent to Lodge Grass, after they established their village to keep close to their children, they ceased living near mountains east of Lodge Grass. Over time, their population near Lodge Grass increased. This Ojibwa Enclave is not within Lodge Grass towns boundaries. Today, natives make up the majority of the population at Lodge Grass. According to 2020's census Lodge Grass has a population of 441. Natives make up 91.2% of the population. Whites 5.7%. Mixed bloods 3.2%. Mexicans 0.9%. The town covers 0.24 sq. mi. and does not include the Ojibwa Enclave established by chief Rocky Boy. There are a total of 164 housing units in Lodge Grass town which gives the town a 3.0 persons per housing unit average. At the Ojibwa Enclave there are 100 or more housing units. Economically, the citizens of Lodge Grass are going through an economic crisis. At least 40% of the towns citizens live below the poverty line. Zip code is 59050.
