Kahkewistahaw, Saskatchewan

This small Ojibwa community is located within Crooked Lakes Ojibwa Reserve's central portion. Below are links to google earth photos of Kahkewistahaw town. There's also a photo of Kah-ke-wis-ta-haw who was not an authentic Ojibwa leader. The Ojibwa prefix "kahke" has a definition of being foolish and of high esteem. According to historians Kahkewistahaw lived at the Cypress Hills of Alberta and Saskatchewan and had to be coerced to relocate to Crooked Lakes Ojibwa Reserve with his Ojibwa Subjects who originally lived at Montana. Cowessess is 8.4 miles or 13.5 kilometers northwest of Kahkewistahaw. It is situated at beautiful Qu'Appelle River Valley. It's just as scenic as Cowessess. Many Montana Ojibwa's relocated to CLR after they fled to the Cypress Hills of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Kahkewistahaw has a population of 627 according to 2021's census. However, Canada does not provide demographics for Reserve communities, so this Ojibwa town's population is less than 627. Kahkewistahaw is somewhat of a disorganized settlement. Many housing units are located along roads north and south of Kahkewistahaw's many portions. Using google earth I counted around 80 to 90 or more housing units at Kahkewistahaw. Total number of dwellings at Crooked Lakes Reserve is 197 with 181 lived in. Since CLR has an average household size of 3.5 persons per household, Kahkewistahaw town possibly has a population of either 350 to over 400. It's an estimate! According to 2021's census 40 people living at CLR are aged 65 and older with 25 of them aged 70 or older. A few farms and a large area of mountains and woodlands, surround this Ojibwa community.
