Book: Place Names of the Ojibwe In Future Codes

Furnace Creek, Timbisha Reservation

It was established in the 1930s. However, Shoshone Ojibwa's were living throughout Death Valley which is a long valley, long before the 1930's. Summers are so hot there it's almost mandatory to leave for cooler locations. Average maximum temperature for July is 117. Before 1930's, Shoshone Ojibwa's lived at what is now Furnace Creek during the cooler time of year then climbed higher up to certain locations where small plateaus or valleys are located on mountains. You'll notice the tall mountains in the photos! Summer temperatures are much cooler there yet winters are colder. During winters they'd climb right back down to where Furnace Creek is. Winters there are mild. Almost as warm as winters at Yuma, Arizona. After this communities establishment in the 1930's, they could no longer just climb up the mountains to summer at. Today, they have to leave the Death Valley region or tough the summers out. During 2010's census, the tiny community had a population of only 24. Native Americans made up 66.7% of the population. Whites 25.0%. Mixed bloods 8.3%. A change in demographics took place between 2010 and 2020. During 2020's census they reported that Furnace Creek has a population of 136. Natives make up 10.3% of the population. Whites 58.1%. Mexican 24.3%. Mixed bloods 16.2%. Asians 2.2%. Blacks 1.5%. They're trying to produce a white town at Furnace Creek. They'll need extremely strong air conditioners. Summers are getting hotter there. Almost adjacent to Furnace Creek on the south is the Shoshone Ojibwa community which is made up of mostly mobile homes. Though it's known as Indian Village we will name their community Timbisha. It's mandatory that they leave during summer months. Even if they had brick houses with air conditioners they'd want to leave during summer months. Older folks would not do well living at Furnace Creek. It's too hot. It's not out of the ordinary for high temperatures to be in the 120's and 130's for a week to 10 days or longer in a row. Climate conditions like that is not good for both animals and humans. Highs in the 120's for 10 straight days will cause issues. As I write this on October 2, 2024, the temperature at Furnace Creek is 111. Furnace Creek has a resort which is the main employment for the settlements citizens and has now been upgraded to a settlement. The Shoshone Ojibwa community named Indian Vallage has a total of 18 housing units. Elevation is 190 feet below Sea Level. It covers 31.0 sq. mi. Zip code is 92328. Below are several links to photos of Timbisha.
