East Glacier Park Village, Montana


Nearly adjacent to Glacier National Park's east and within an Ojibway Blackfeet Reservation established in 1896, this Ojibway CDP (census designated place) of East Glacier Park Village, has a population of 354 according to 2020's census. Ojibwa's make up 60.7% of the population. Whites 29.1%. Mixed bloods 9.0%. Mexicans 1.4%. Blacks 0.6%. Below are several links to google earth photos of East Glacier Park Village, Montana. Chief Rocky Boy and his Ojibway Subjects were very much at home at this location some 4 miles or 6.5 kilometers southeast of Lower Two Medicine Lake. Chief Rocky Boy was betrayed by American leaders. In summer of 1902, he led many Ojibway People to Blackfeet Reservation where they settled west of Blackfoots or adjacent to Rocky Mountains. Around 55% of this CDP's population is Native American, while around 45% is non Indian. In 1910, they announced establishment of Glacier National Park which enraged chief Rocky Boy who knew he had been deceived. Land area of East Glacier Park Village is 4.4 sq. mi. There are 142 housing units in East Glacier Park Village. East Glacier Park Village has an average househoild size of 2.6 persons per household. Many of this CDP's citizens are doing well financially. Around 14% live under poverty line. East Glacier Park Village is a resort location. Elevation is 4,823. This settlement is located adjacent to Rocky Mountains yet exposed to plains or prairie land which makes this location windy during winter months. These winds are named Chinook Winds. There are two distinct areas of this community. Larger one is exposed to the plains and feels full impact of chinook winds. Smaller area is slightly northwest and is within woodlands which possibly reduces wind speeds. After GNP was established in 1910, whites settled in this community and started business establishments. Most of the land East Glacier Park Village is on, is "Fee Land" which is subject to City, County, Federal and State taxes. Thus, why this community is well off! Before whites illegally settled at this location, an Ojibwa village was located at the vicinity to manage Reservoirs (Za-ga-i-gan-in) which allowed for their canoes to sail from Mississippi Rivers mouth at the Gulf of Mexico to Pacific Ocean. Marias River (aka Two Medicine River) was linked to creeks near East Glacier Park Village and Reservoirs created by Ojibwa's that linked the creeks to Flathead River. From Flathead River they easily sailed to Pacific Ocean. Salmon swam from Pacific Ocean to northcentral Montana including the Great Falls area before whites ruined it. Lewis and Clark were instructed to investigate the waterway near what is now East Glacier Park Village and the Rocky Mountain Trench (aka Continental Divide and Main Divide). Lewis and a few of his men carried out that task, then afterwards headed south from Mission Valley to meet with Clark and his men at Big Hole Basin where they had instructions on finding the source of Mississippi River.
