Chippewa Indians Sagkeeng First Nation & History

This band of chippewa indians (sagkeeng chippewa's who were once known as fort alexander) inhabit a region in manitoba where few white settlements exist, but they have a year round road going to those white settlements and they are feeling the effects of the nearby white culture. Their history likely includes many of the anishinabek from minnesota, north dakota and wisconsin fleeing to that region to escape from the whites. Their first nation is situated just southeast of huge lake winnipeg, and is surrounded by countless other lakes and a nearby vast forest. We might want to call their reserve the entire eastern end of lake winnipeg. The sagkeeng band of chippewa indians are probably more numerous than the 6,844 the whites claim their first nation population to be. Supposedly out of the 6,844, only around 3,000 live on the reserve. Since they year round easy access to white settlements, it has depleted their first nation population. The size of their reserve is 8,771 hectares or 21,674 acres. Their history involves diasporas of anishinabek from other locations fleeing to that region. The seven fires prophecy led them to that region. Some of the band citizens still rely on fishing, hunting, and trapping for a living.
