Gila River Reservation

It was created on February 28, 1859. Below is a map of Gila River Indian Reservation and demographics of this Reservation adjacent to Phoenix. Pima People are native to this location in Arizona. They are also known as Tohono O'odham. Their language is a part of Mexican-Opata Language Family which is now known as Uto-Aztecan Language Family. Their language is a dialect of Mexican-Opata (aka Uto-Aztecan). Gila River Reservation was once actually a part of Papago Reservation in early 20th century. We know Ojibway People are native to Arizona! In southeast Arizona around 1900 or so, around 2,000 to 2,500 landless Ojibway's were in need of land. They were descendants of old Chiricajua Reservation. Today, Arizona's Kickapoo (they are Ojibway - if they spoke Ojibway it means they are Ojibway) Tribe is trying to gain Federal and State Recognition. Gila River Reservation was once a part of Papago Reservation. This was back around 1910 to 1916 or 1917.

In 1914, chief Rocky Boy sent letter to President Wilson telling him he would stay out of European Conflict. He meant Mexico's Civil War. Chief Rocky Boy fled Blackfeet Reservation in 1910 after learning his Reservation was given to Glacier National Park. He was negotiating with Secretary Lane about securing land for his Ojibway Subjects at the time. What happed in 1916 and 1917, is directly related to what chief Rocky Boy was doing in 1913 and 1914 or Papago Reservation was possibly created in 1913 or 1914. According to Historians, Papago Reservation was created in 1916 and 1917. American leaders did not keep their promise of one large Reservation for Tohono O'odham People! They fragmented this vast Reservation in either 1916 or 1917 because American leaders knew by then that Mexico's War was about over. Somehow Gila River and Maricopa or Ak-Chin Reservations, no longer identify with Papago or Tohono O'odham Reservation. They do adhere to a Tohono O'odham Tribal Name. Leaders of Papago Reservation claim their land extends as far west as Yuma and also a bit to their east!
