Skownan First Nation & History
Their reserve is located in a region in manitoba where few white settlements exist, but the skownan first nation band does have year round road access to far off white settlements which means they have to deal with the problems arising out of visiting those far off white settlements. Their history is one that did not see constant contact with the whites until a year round road had been laid down. Before then, most of the chippewa indians lived on their first nation and probably lived off their land. Their reserve covers 1,857 hectares or 4,589 acres. However, the surrounding land is depleted of white settlements and many of the citizens of the skownan reserve band live off the land. Their population has seen a drift of many of their citizens leaving the reserve for far off white settlements. Their total enrolled is 1,236, but only 637 actually live on reserve. The year round road access has changed their daily lives.
