Box Elder, Montana

Located at the western portion of this Ojibwa Reservation (parts of Box Elder extend off Reservation), is the CDP (Census Designated Place) of Box Elder. It can confuse you! Box Elder is a community of Fort Assiniboine Indian Reservation. Not all however! Below are links to google earth photos of the Box Elder region. Slightly to it's east and to Box Elder's east boundary is Rocky Boy West that you must pay attention to. Satellite Image shows Box Elders boundaries. Another shows boundaries of Rocky Boy West and Box Elder which will help you comprehend. Many housing units are located a 1/4 of a mile to 1/2 a mile east of Box Elder and they are a part of Rocky Boy West. There's as many as five distinct communities instead of one. Just south of Box Elder, is probably what most think of as Box Elder. However, it is not. It's known as Rocky Boy West. It's also a community of Fort Assiniboine Indian Reservation. This page includes both Box Elder and Rocky Boy West. Population of Rocky Boy West is 1,042 according to 2020's census. Ojibwa's make up 97.1% of it's population. Mexicans 4.6%. Mixed bloods 1.9%. Whites 0.8%. According to 2020's census, Box Elder has a population of 85. Box Elder CDP has a total of 35 housing units with about 3/4 occupied, which gives Box Elder an average household size of around 3.3 persons per housing unit. Ojibwa's make up 43.5% of Box Elders population. Whites 48.2%. Mexicans 7.1%. Mixed bloods 7.1%. As written, parts of Box Elder are located off this Ojibwa Reservation. Chief Rocky Boy had nothing to do with Fort Assiniboine Indian Reservation. Though chief Rocky Boys Ojibwa Subjects were relocated to Little Bears Reservation around 1909, the forced relocations greatly intensified in 1916 on up to the 1930's. Little Bear was forced to cede nearly all of his Reservation in 1916. He was left with either 35,000 acres or 56,000 acres. Land was added later. Chief Rocky Boys Ojibwa Subjects settled where Box Elder and Rocky Boy West are and also where Boneau and Azure are.
