Pablo, Montana

Pablo is Jocko Reservation's largest predominantly native community. However, Pablo was originally a white town and remains a white town because of Salish Kootenai College. Below are links to google earth photos of Pablo. Dixon or Old Agency was Jocko Reservations originally Reservation headquarters. During either the 1950's or early 1960's, a move to Pablo took place. Since then Pablo has become a predominantly native community. After chief Rocky Boy reached an agreement to accept land allotments (he did so demanding that land allotments could not be sold) a series of white towns were established. One was Pablo. After land allotments were agreed to, finding land in compact form for land allotments was mandatory. What was left after land allotments, became surplus land and was ceded. It's no longer Jocko Reservation land. Jocko Reservations mountains remain owned by Jocko Reservation. Pablo is a settlement which is currently going through tough times. Settlements which have populations of around 2,000, usually have 100's of businesses. In Pablo's case it is different. Many jobs at Pablo, are tribal government jobs, schools, police, hospital and so on. Pablo covers 4.9 sq. mi. or 12.6 sq. km. Pablo is a CDP (census designated place) but most of Pablo has an appearance of a city. Majority of Pablo's housing units are located within a small area that covers less than 1.0 sq. mi. At Pablo, is Salish Kootenai College. SKC college employs over 345 people. A total of 1,207 students attend this college. That indicates that college students make up much of the population of Pablo if not most of Pablo's population! Not all are Native American. According to 2020's census, Pablo's population is 2,138. That is a decrease of 5.1% from 2010's census of 2,254. There are a total of 821 housing units in Pablo, with 747 lived in. It gives Pablo an average of 2.9 persons per household. Native Americans (most are probably from Salish Kootenai College) account for 55.3% of this cdp's population. Whites 33.2%. Mixed bloods 10.2%. Mexican 6.1%. Asian 0.3%. Zip code is 59855. Elevation is 3,091 feet above sea level or 942 meters above sea level. Pablo has a large native population because of Salish Kootenai College! According to SKC, total enrollment of Salish Kootenai College is 621 full time students, with 75% being native or mixed bloods. At wikipedia they reported that Salish Kootenai College has an enrollment of 1,207. SKC was established in 1977 or about 20 years after Old Agency was discontuned!
