Sandy Bay, Lake Manitoba Ojibwa Reserve

Ojibwa Folks of Sandy Bay were once a part of Long Plain, Roseau River and Swan Lake Ojibwa's. However, a move to become a part of Ojibwa Folks living around Lake Manitoba was accomplished. Chief Yellow Quill might have had a role in sending Ojibwa's who lived at extreme south Manitoba's plains, north to Sandy Bay, Ebb & Flow, Fairford and Pine Creek. This First Nations housing units are widely scattered giving an impression that there's no town. However, from Main Road where it merges with Ridge Road South east to Lake Road North, this community looks more like a town. A disorganized looking town however. According to 2021's census the population of Sandy Bay FN is 2,598. It's population increased from 2,515 in 2016 to 2,598 in 2021. An unusual population increase because few businesses are located at Sandy Bay. No housing units are located adjacent to Lake Manitoba. This community may also be known as Marius. From Centre Road to Demarais Road then east to Lake Road, it looks more like a town. A disturbing stat about Sandy Bay is according to 2021's census, more men reach their 80's than women. There are 525 housing units at Sandy Bay. Average household size is 4.9 persons per household. It's estimated that around 500 people speak Ojibwa at Sandy Bay or 1 in 5 people at Sandy Bay speak Ojibwa. At Ebb & Flow only 10% of the population speaks Ojibwa. Only 5% speak Ojibwa at Pine Creek which is far to the north. Below are links to google maps photos of Marius or Sandy Bay.
