Nicickousemenecaning First Nation

This band of Ojibway's live in far western northwestern Ontario, near Minnesota. Their community is part of Rainy Lake Reserve. Below are google earth photos of Nicickousemenecaning First Nation and google earth photos of other communities of Rainy Lake Reserve. Canada will not recognize this Reserve they agreed to when they negotiated with Ojibway leaders during 1869-1870's Red River Rebellion. Ojibway leaders wanted a fair treaty and large Reserves for allowing Red River Colony to become independant of Ojibway rule. Canada agreed then lied. Chief Yellow Quill (he may have been chief Big Bear) had stationed Ojibway Soldiers at Portage la Prairie to prevent whites, Eskimos and mixed bloods from expanding west from Red River Colony. That led to those negotiations that led to creations of Rainy Lake Reserve and Shoal Lake Reserve. Both are quite large. Nicickousemenecaning First Nation has an on-Reserve population of 157 according to 2016's census. They have 46 dwellings with 43 lived in. Average household size is 3.4 persons per household. Around 30 speak Ojibway. Today, there are 14 so called Rainy Lake Reserves. However, Canada lied. That original Rainy Lake Reserve is yet in existence.
